V5-V7 municipal residential blocks with hotel at Vydrica in Bratislava´s part called Podhradie had been one of the 5 subjects of a competition. Due to its unique location, the competition had been followed closely both by professional and non-professional public. Thank to "challenging idea of disturbing the zoning map scheme of the zone", our design was rewarded by a special prize. The concept of three masses, displaced perpendicularly on two longitudinally oriented bottom floors, was assumed to bring d, while observing demanding economic requirements of the investors and regulative requirements of the city resulting primarily from monument preservation requirements. While the masses on the first two floors were designed within regulated traces, hereby logically allowing to maintain streets following the level lines, and providing good possibilities for entering the buildings both by car and by feet, the turned (terraced) higher floors support optical connection with the Castle Hill, which had been so attractive for this area during its history. Thank to partial change of orientation from regulated north-southern to east-western one, and thank to "leaning" of the buildings on the hill by the short part of the frontage, the major part of the long frontages could be released for more apartments, and conditions have been provided for their better lighting, ventilation and layout.
