The KULTURPARK (culture park) project was the main new contribution to the project Košice – European Cultural Capital for 2013 (EHMK2013). Accordingly - we have adapted our urbanistic/architectonic tendering concept, bringing new impulses going beyond the framework of just adapting the historic objects of the former military barracks.
From the aspect of our perception of the broader relations towards the historic centre of Košice, we suggested a municipal cultural theme-ring, replacing the area’s internal ring-road by a waterway, which would materialise a new „cultural island“ of Košice with the culture and relaxation park of existing grown trees in the middle. Simultaneously, we have created a new and modern dominant and monument for the project Košice – EHMK2013, i.e. a media tower. Another conceptual pillar of our solution was the vertical emphasising of the Kulturpark’s main building using the new „levitating“ substance of the library and its studies situated on the top floor, offering a nice view of the historic city centre of Košice with its dominants from the pleasant café-study. At the very same time, this „levitating“ substance could act as a projection screen for the open-air cinema in the evening hours.
Our concept of Kulturpark got extended by two new stand-alone objects – the cranked “soft substance” of the hotel situated at the NW-corner of that area and the object of the rental offices and hostel on the SE-corner. The remaining two historical buildings of the former military barracks were supposed to be integrated into the Kulturpark as well.
